Taichung to Lanyu | HSR / South Link with Houbihu Backup

Taichung to Lanyu | HSR / South Link with Houbihu Backup. No workable connection today (likely a winter off-season day for Lanyu — see notes below).

There is no direct service from Taichung to Lanyu, and the best path swings hard with the season. In peak season (Apr–Sep), go via Houbihu. Take TRA south to Kaohsiung, or HSR to Zuoying, then board a Kenting / Hengchun express bus for the 2.5-hour run to Houbihu Ferry Pier (Hengchun area, Pingtung). Boats run alternately by Jinxing No. 3 and Lyudao Star No. 3 — 2 sailings a day (outbound 07:00 and 12:20; return 09:30 and 14:45), 120 minutes to Kaiyuan Harbor on Lanyu. A 5–6 a.m. departure from Taichung on HSR catches the 12:20 sailing — about 7–8 hours end-to-end, 3–4 hours faster than detouring through Fugang.

In winter (Nov–Mar), Houbihu shuts down and Fugang (Taitung) is the only option. All-TRA via the South-Link Line takes about 5 hours; HSR plus Puyuma / EMU3000 trims it to 3–3.5 hours, faster but with a step up in fare. From Taitung Train Station, board Puyuma Transport Route 201 at Bay 1 for the 20-minute ride to Fugang Ferry Pier (Taitung) at NT$25, then take the 150-minute ferry to Kaiyuan Harbor at NT$1,200 one way. The winter Fugang–Lanyu line runs on a government-subsidized schedule: fixed Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with selected Sundays added (check the monthly calendar on ferry.tw for exact dates).

The South-Link Line is often suspended during typhoons or heavy rain (July–November); check TRA announcements before you leave. Houbihu sailings can also be canceled at short notice for rough seas — confirm on ferry.tw the day before to avoid showing up to a closed pier.
